Yangel Herrera: David Villa’s adopted son
David Villa has been a long-term admirer of Yangel Herrera.
The pair played together at New York City FC, while the latter has most recently enjoyed a stellar season with Granada.
«Before arriving at [New York City], David Villa had already written to be and had offered to lend a hand,» Herrera said in the past.
Meanwhile, Villa has always put in good words for his former teammate.
«Yangel Herrera is one of the best players in MLS,» he said once.
«Yangel is going to be a world class player in the next few years.
«Yangel Herrera is very good with the ball, but he’s also good without it.»
The Venezuelan’s form in LaLiga Santander has earned him plenty of possible suitors, including Villa’s former club Valencia.
For Herrera, who is still on the books at Manchester City, there is a stumbling block over a possible move to the Mestalla.
The 22-year-old doesn’t yet hold an EU passport and would take up one of Valencia’s three allocated non-EU spots in the squad – spots already held by Lee Kang-in, Maxi Gomez and Gabriel Paulista.
Paulista, though, is pushing to be granted Spanish citizenship, which would free up another space in Javi Gracia’s squad.
