Spanish Football Atletico Madrid’s captains carry the load
Atletico Madrid have benefited from the form and fitness of three of their most experienced players since LaLiga Santander returned.
Diego Simeone’s side haven’t lost since the extended break in the season, with a draw against Athletic Club at San Mames the only time they have dropped points.
Jan Oblak, Jose Maria Gimenez and Koke are Atletico’s first three captains and also the top three players in terms of minutes played in June and all three have made key contributions.
Oblak has played every minute, 450 to be precise, of Atletico’s first five games back against Athletic, Osasuna, Real Valladolid, Levante and Alaves.
In those five matches, the Slovenian has let in just two goals and kept three clean sheets.
As for Gimenez, he’s spent 391 minutes on the pitch since the season resumed.
The Uruguayan had previously only played just a handful of minutes, against Liverpool at Anfield, since suffering an injury in January.
The centre-back has started four of Atletico’s five games and came on for the final 30 minutes in the win at Levante after an injury to Mario Hermoso.
Koke is close behind Gimenez having played 381 minutes in the last five games.
The Atletico captain hasn’t actually lost a game during 2020 and has started four of Los Rojiblancos’ first five games back.
Thomas Partey is the next most used player in Simeone’s squad this month having played 375 minutes.
Then come Renan Lodi, Stefan Savic (360 minutes each), Saul (354), Diego Costa (265), Marcos Llorente (260), Kieran Trippier (243) and Joao Felix (229).
Santiago Arias (207 minutes), Angel Correa (199), Yannick Carrasco (186), Alvaro Morata (181) and Hector Herrera (179) are the fresher players at Simeone’s disposal.
