Atletico Madrid’s penalty woes continue
Atletico Madrid’s penalty curse reared its head again on Friday night during their 3-0 win over Real Mallorca at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Los Rojiblancos have scored eight of their 11 penalties so far this season, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.
In their last two matches, for example, Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa have both missed from the spot but had their blushes saved because of VAR.
Furthermore, of Atletico’s five penalty takers this season, five have missed on at least one occasion.
Joao Felix is the only taker with a 100 percent record, scoring his only attempt against Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League.
Diego Simeone’s side were beaten on penalties in the Supercopa de Espana final by Real Madrid, with Thomas Partey and Saul missing during the shootout.
Saul has redeemed himself to an extent in recent days, scoring the retaken penalty against Barcelona after Costa had missed.
Costa has officially scored two of his three penalties this season, with his miss at the Camp Nou not counting.
As for Morata, he’s scored three of his four penalties this campaign, with his only official miss coming against Getafe on Matchday 1.
Including Costa and Morata’s VAR-corrected misses from recent days and the shootout against Real Madrid in Jeddah, Atletico have scored nine of their 16 penalty attempts this season, giving them a success rate of just 56.25 percent.
