Two Atletico Madrid players who tested positive for COVID-19 won’t travel to Lisbon
Panic spread quickly throughout the Atletico Madrid offices on Sunday evening when it emerged that two of their players had tested positive for the Coronavirus, just hours before the club was due to fly to Lisbon, however these two individuals will now not make that journey.
Sime Vrsaljko and Angel Correa were named on Monday afternoon as the two individuals in question, with both having been starters for the club in the 2018 Europa League final against Marseille.
Both players would have had no idea their farewell to the competition would come at Anfield, especially once Los Colchoneros secured victory on Merseyside, yet that is what appears to have happened.
Vrsaljko was a strong performer against Liverpool, deputising for Kieran Tripper who was injured, and it looked as though the Croatian had overcome his numerous own fitness concerns.
However, this positive test has ruled him out of the mini tournament in Lisbon and Diego Simeone will have to work without two options.
Correa almost left the club in 2019 with AC Milan seriously interested, but a deal fell through and he once again contributed domestically for the Spanish club.
In the Champions League he was less impactful and his only goal in the competition came five years ago back in 2016.
He made errors in the defeat to Juventus in 2018/19 which saw Atleti eliminated and his own bad luck in the Champions League continues with this infection.
