Trippier and Lodi settling nicely at Atletico Madrid
There are a lot of reasons behind Atletico Madrid’s 2019/20 season being one of transition, but Kieran Trippier and Renan Lodi are two.
In their first experiences outside of their respective countries, the pair of full-backs are making Atletico forget about the legends who came before them.
Trippier arrived in Juanfran’s shadow, while the younger Lodi came in attempting to succeed Filipe Luis.
Since his early days at the Wanda Metropolitano, Trippier has demonstrated a right foot similar to that of his idol, David Beckham.
He’s assisted Alvaro Morata five times in his 29 appearances, with one of those coming in his very first game.
Lodi, in the other side, has three assists himself.
With at least four games left across all competitions, the pair already have more assists than Filipe and Juanfran managed in any of their seasons under Diego Simeone, excluding the title-winning 2013/14 campaign, in which they got 10.
When the other full-backs that season are considered, they totalled 14 assists from either side, though Santiago Arias and Sime Vrsaljko take this season’s total to 10 already.
It’s still premature to compare them with their predecessors, but Atletico’s full-back situation looks promising.
