Valencia won the Copa del Rey last season, but they won’t be retaining that title in 2019/20.

Los Che fell to a 2-1 defeat at Granada on Tuesday evening, with former Valencia man Roberto Soldado scoring in the third minute and in stoppage time.

The striker’s opener was a stunning effort that capitalised on Granada’s bright start and that kickstarted a fascinating game.

Granada hit the post twice in the first half as they came close to extending their lead, while Valencia had one goal ruled out for offside and then one that did stand as Rodrigo Moreno pounced in the 40th minute.

Soldado and Maxi Gomez both came close early on in the second half, before Granada substitute Darwin Machis came on and steered the home side forward once more, testing Jaume Domenech twice.

Momentum was building for Granada and they were handed a bit of luck with a stoppage time corner as Jaume Costa blocked the cross with his arm, leading to a VAR review and a penalty.

Soldado stepped up and fired Granada to their first Copa del Rey semi-final since 1969.
