Saul’s suspension proves costly
Saul Niguez’s fifth yellow card of the LaLiga Santander season came in Atletico Madrid’s match against Espanyol on Sunday, and it will cost him his place in an elite club.
Saul will no longer be able to boast that he’s played in every minute of the 2019/20 season, having been the only Atletico Madrid player to have done so until now.
Not even Jan Oblak managed this feat, having been replaced in the last few minutes at Anoeta.
The record is held by others outside of Spain, though; in Europe’s top five leagues across their respective domestic competitions and the Champions League.
Inter’s Milan Skriniar, Benjamin Pavard at Bayern Munich, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci have played every league and Champions League minute to date.
It should be noted that Saul is the only player in Spain to manage it, hitting an uninterrupted 1,530 minutes.
