LaLiga and RFEF must agree on champions plus teams for promotion and relegation
If the COVID-19 pandemic has brought anything to the world of sport it’s uncertainty.
A number of problems still loom over Spanish football and one of those is deciding who will be named champions, who will be promoted and who will be relegated in the event of the 2019/20 season not finishing on the pitch.
The regulations agreed between LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) doesn’t explain a resolution in a situation like the one being faced.
They do, though, explain that there must be a mutual agreement between both bodies in any decision-making process, without specifically referring to a season ending prematurely.
Javier Tebas confirmed on Friday that, whatever happened, teams would be promoted and relegated and that no LaLiga Santander season would have more than 20 teams competing.
That rules out four teams being promoted from the Segunda Division, as well as ruling out the idea of nobody being relegated from the top tier.
A final table would have to be agreed between LaLiga and the RFEF.
