Joao Felix’s first season at Atletico Madrid has been better than Aguero’s
There is no doubt that Joao Felix‘s debut season at Atletico Madrid has not been particularly good, given the 127 million euro fee paid for the 20-year-old last summer.
Both the club and the fans expected more from a player who has very good qualities with the ball at his feet.
The four injuries that Joao Felix has suffered, his adaptation to a new style of play and the coronavirus-enforced stoppage of football are all factors to bear in mind, yet there is still the feeling that he himself could have done more.
Regardless, there is reason for optimism.
To begin with, Joao Felix has had some very impressive performances against the likes of Villarreal and Osasuna, while his first season numbers are better than the ones Sergio Aguero had.
Like the Argentine, Joao Felix joined Atletico whilst still a teenager, both are attacking players and have been tipped to go all the way to the top. In fact, the Manchester City striker has been able to do so.
With these similarities, it is time to look back and remember that Aguero scored six goals in the 2006/07 season, his first campaign with Los Colchoneros.
He played 38 games, all of which came in LaLiga Santander because Atletico were not in Europe.
Joao Felix has been able to also net six goals in LaLiga Santander, although he could add to that tally against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
What is noteworthy is that he reached six goals in 26 games, 12 less than Aguero.
Atletico remain confident that Joao Felix will reach the top, they are just remaining patient with him; he is a long-term project.
They hope to take some of the pressure of his shoulders so that he can hit the ground running in the Champions League.
